How are your closets organized?

Are your clothes sorted by color? season? work vs. regular clothes? types (pants with pants, shirt with shirts...)? or no system at all?

my closet is basically sorted by type, but other than that, colors and everything are all mixed up.. i'm thinking of reorganizing it by color just to mix things up haha

I actually have mine sorted by color, in the order of the rainbow :) I find it's a lot easier to find things that way, at least for me. I have all of my dresses hanging off to one side, though, since they hang lower and I keep things on the closet floor on the other side.

I have all my tops (sweaters, blouses, ts, etc.) hanging, sorted by color, then sleeve length. I don't really separate the seasons, because I really don't have many warm clothes. Pullover sweaters are folded on a shelf underneath. All jackets are hung on the clothing bar below that, also by color. Next to them are all of my skirts, again by color. On my tall rack, I have my dresses, jeans, pants and shorts. I have shelves for all of my shoes and I keep socks, etc. in plastic drawers (someday I am getting built-ins).

I can't imagine not having my clothes organized by color. It's so much easier!

These comments are making me wonder if I should reconsider my closet arrangement, if only because arranging by color would make stuff so much easier to find.  Mine is arranged by sleeve length, from camis/tanks on the left to blazers and jackets on the right.

My closet is organized by type.  I use different color plastic hangers to signify the types:  White hangers = shirts/tops/blouses, blue hangers=capris/crops, green hangers=skirts, etc.

It works quite well for me.

My clothes are arranged by type (tshirts, ls, jeans, pants, dress shirts, tanks, other shirts, skirts, dresses), but not color. I would like to arrange by color, but that would take me forever to keep up with because I don't do laundry very often and have a ton to do when I finally do it!

My closet is arranged by skirts, pants, pant suits, skirt suits, dresses. Then by color or print. It's not the best in the world, but for the most part, it works for me. I do like pollyjean's idea, to have them sorted by the hanger color, but I'd have to go out and buy NEW hangers. LOL

I have two "closets." One is a very tiny closet, the other is a stand-alone wardrobe from IKEA.

In my regular closet I have: long-sleeve tees, long-sleeve sweaters, most of my skirts, jeans, jackets/blazers, dresses.

In the wardrobe I have: cardigans, long-sleeve blouses, short-sleeve blouses and sweaters, my more delicate skirts, my 2 suits, and work pants.

Basically I tried to put the light weight items in the wardrobe since it's not as strong, and the heavier/bulkier things in my closet.

I organize based on item - jackets, skirts , dresses, pants, jeans... Within those categories I try to keep the colors organized.

my closet is pretty small, so i can only have one season's clothes in there at a time. the out of season stuff gets put in boxes under the bed or at the top of the closet.

seasonal clothes are organized as follows, left to right -

going out tops (used infrequently), long sleeved tops, short sleeved tops, sleeveless tops, cropped pants, casual long pants, dressy long pants, skirts (by hem length casual ---> dressy), day dresses, fancy/dressy dresses

i don't sort by color because the majority of the stuff in my closet is actually patterned. but my drawers are sorted by color (tanks all in one drawer, rolled by color, tees in another, etc).

i have so many blazers and jackets that they have their own closet (where we keep our luggage and other miscellaneous travel stuff). my husband also keeps his suits in there. coats have their own closet near our front door.

my shoes are organized on shelves on the floor of my closet, heels on top, mid-height in the middle, flats on the floor. my shoes are organized by color on their shelves.

i look forward to someday having more space so everything can just be in one place and out at the same time!

Mine is organized by type of clothing and then brand. For example, all of my dresses, shirts, jeans, etc...are in one seperate section of my closet but then broken down by brand. My belts and scarves are hanging on hooks for easy access. And my shoes are on shelves organzied by type of shoe (pump, flat, boot) and then by brand. I don't know how it all turned out to be so organized, but it makes things so much easier for me to get dressed in the morning.

You guys are making me feel like the biggest slob.... I share a small-ish walk in closet with my bf. My clothes are on one side and his are on the other. On my side, I try to keep all bottoms on the left half, and all tops on the right half, but sometimes they migrate to each other's sides when I am not looking wink.gif There is no organization by color, brand, style, etc. My shoes are on a shoe rack (again, in random order) and I keep my knits and sweaters in a large dresser. I wonder how much time I could save every morning by having a really organized system like you girls do, or if I could even maintain it...

mine is organized by type and then color-
hanging i have skirts, pants and jackets, dresses, tops only if they must be hung. most of my tops that can be folded are on shelves organized by color - sweaters are separate organized by color - my jeans i have folded and stacked by length on a shelf.
shoes i have in an over the door rack, boots on the floor.
going out tops, scarves, more casual skirts, workout gear, bras/socks/underwear, bathing suits, pajamas are all in a dresser in my room.

Mine are organized by type (work, weekend, going out, etc), then by style (pants, shirts, blouses, skirts, etc), then by color. And everything is on clear plastic hangers (the kind in lots of stores). I'm only marginally obsessive about my closet organization.

Let's just say that this is the only area in life in which I am somewhat organized. The shelf above the rod looks like Sanford & Son.

i also sort by type (i.e. pants, outerwear, etc), and then by color. i alternate blacks and whites, though, because i forget what clothing i have if they're bunched together in a white blob.

By type, then by color. Shoes I have on shelves, which I think is pretty much the best thing ever. I have an irrational loathing of all over-the-door shoe apparatuses, which I am lucky enough to be able to indulge since we have plenty of closet space. Bras, socks and underwear are in little canvas bins on shelves as well... the only things not actually IN my closet are scarves & tights. I also have handbags on shelves, with little clip-on shelf dividers to prop them up.

Hmm, actually this post is motivating me to go and clean up the closet... it's been looking a little sloppy lately!

Poorly.  However, reading this thread has made me seriously consider organizing it for real!
