Inexpensive kitchen storage options
Permalink Closed

We don't have a pantry in our kitchen, so I have our dry goods and spices in a cabinet instead.  It doesn't function so well - since I'm short, I have to climb onto the counter top to get to the top shelf, things are stuffed behind other things, items get spilled and knocked over, etc.

I have some wall space where shelves could be installed, and I'm thinking of doing that and then getting a whole slew of canisters and jars to decant everything into.  Problem is, all the sets of canisters/jars I've found so far would also cost a whole slew of money!  Ideally I'd like to be able to label some of the canisters (so I don't mix up the salt and sugar!), but they don't all have to labelable (?) or even match.  Clear would be good so I can see what's what, but I'm cool with mixing and matching sizes and shapes.

I'm wondering if I might be able to find such things cheaply, not in sets, and maybe not intended for kitchen purposes?  Craft supply or something?  If anyone has seen anything anywhere that could be used for this purpose, I'd appreciate any heads up I can get!

maybe mason jars? for your flour/salt/sugar, etc - you can get these at a craft supply store or walmart for pretty cheap
also, just went by target y/day and they had really nice canisters in a set of 3 for under $20 (i think)

i tried looking on ikea.com for you, but had little success, their website is so frustrating!!!! grrrr. but i saw on their latest comercial they had some really practical storage containers and such, so if you are good at navigating websites (or if you have a store near you) check it out.

I use a lot of basic glass jars with the bale lids, like these:

Cost Plus/World Market always has them, but I find them almost anywhere - 99 cent stores, thrift stores, etc., so I also have a mixed-and-matched theme. Some are old, some new, some greenish, some big, some little, some with embossed or raised designs, etc. Plus, they're clear, things stay fresh, and they're easy to wash in the d/w.

Our Ikea isn't opening until the end of the summer hmm.gif.  Phooey!  And unfortunately they don't ship any of the canisters that you can actually look at on their website ...

Suasoria - thank you for reminding me of the dollar store and Cost plus!  I'll have to check both, and start keeping my eyes open at the thrift.

i did a search on froogle and found this set:
48810.png for $6.83 from www.healthclassics.com

i didn't do much more reseach on the site, but i would also check out ikea, i feel like it would be a much better price than the prices at cost plus (even if you can find good coupons there).  is a different location or online an option for you since yours isn't open yet.

That set isn't half bad Shopgirl!  I'll check it out.  The next closest Ikea is 3 hours away, so anything I'd save on the canisters would be spent many times over on gas ......
