just thought i'd check in to see if anyone has experience with this. i bought a pork shoulder roast on sunday afternoon at the grocery store and brought it straight home, where it's been in the refrig. ever since. the date on the sticker says "sell by 2/14." today is 2/13, and i came home from work tonight and noticed that there was a strange funk in the refrig. i figured it must be something else, since i just bought that roast and its date isn't even until tomorrow, but when i took it out, yep--funk. it's not horrible, but it's kind of a sulfur-ish smell.
i've never bought a pork roast before--what is the scent of it like, uncooked? it's not supposed to have any real smell at all, right? i should take it back to the store tomorrow before work and ask them to give me a new one, right? ugh--such a hassle :(
I can't speak from experience with pork roast in particular, but IME meat is never supposed to smell at all if it's not rotted/spoiled. I've had a couple of steaks smell rancid on me because I left them to defrost in the fridge for too long (3 days and up).
i agree, don't eat it. any time meat smells off, it is. your grocery store should refund you. this has happened to me a couple times and the stores have always refunded me right away, so i don't think they will give you a hard time at your store.
