I started really working on taking care of my skin last year and am happy to say that it looks 100% better today than it did a year ago. I started using the Neutrogena Complete Acne Kit. I like that the cleanser is mild and creamy and that it comes with a moisturizer with sunblock (but it's only 15SPF so I use a more powerful sunblock on top of it.)

I also do a weekly face peel from Makeup Artists Choice.  It's helping to even my skin tone and reduce the sun spots. 

I think the most important thing I've started to use is a vitamin C serum.  My skin just loves it.  It makes it feel healthy and also helps with evening the skin tone.  I now understand what other women mean when they say "glowy" skin.  I get that from Makeup Artists Choice website too.

I think it's very important to try the dermatologist first.  You might have some skin issues, like the cystic acne, that he or she will be better prepared to deal with.
