Dying a top black...
Permalink Closed

I have a pink hoodie that I love and fits great, but the color is just too much. It is a bright Pepto pink. I put it on, walk around the house for a while and then change before I leave. I would looooooove to dye it black. I am pretty sure it will dye well, but I just wanted a second, or third, opinion. It is 97% cotton and 3%spandex. I have only ever dyed 100% cotton before (jeans) and that dyes well. Anyone have experience with dying other fabrics?

I've tried to dye things black before but it never really seems to work. Everything turns out a weird dark green/purple/greyish color. FWIW I'm pretty sure I've only ever used rit dye, maybe a craft store would have something better?

Yeeps, that is what I was going to use too. Haha, I think I will pop into the fabric store and see what they can tell me. Thanks

Honestly if you don't wear it right now, I'd give it a try. You're not losing much.

Here's a tutorial on dying in the washing machine.

If it's a small item you can use a big pot on the stove - probably not a pot you want to cook in, but...it works well too.

(I've actually been thinking about pouring black dye in a washload of black clothes to refresh them.)

Will this work on things like balck t-shirts that have faded?  I have a couple that I'd wear again if they didn't look so dull.

I've refreshed black clothes by dying - it works well

Interesting idea! It's just like color-depositing hair products.

Just be sure to run a extra cycle after using dye in your washer with a capful of bleach

hi! I dyed fabrics about 25 years ago, had a lot of experience. So, I don't know what's available in dyes on the current market. However, if it has spandex, & generally you can dye cotton - spandex will shine through. Also, hoodie probably has a zipper...that will not catch. Although can come out an interesting combo - many dying mistakes turned into a cool look...you never know.
