This is a lofty request.  But, if anyone is up for the challenge, give it your best shot.  My mom suggested that she, my sister (30), my husband, and I meet for a vacation instead of having her visit us in Charlotte.

We could go almost anywhere in the US, Canada, territories, but I'll give you some background.   We are in the very initial inspirational stage.  Any and all ideas can be gathered and put on the table.

Here are some rules/suggestions.  I just want to see what others come up with.

1. No cruise ships
2. No Disney-anything
3. No "adventure/super athletic" destinations/camping/roughing it

Participants:
Female, age 57, from a small town, works at a financial institution
Hasn't been too many places in her lifetime, and has always lived in the same small town.  Organized yet easy-going, relatively conventional but still open to some new things within reason.  Not particularly athletic.  Likes beach, sun, pools, dining out, socializing, family, and shopping.  Extrovert

Female, age 30, account manager, conventional and professional, grew up in small town but has lived in moderately-sized city for several years.  Has traveled a little bit within the U.S. and Canada.  Willing to try new things but likes to have control.  Somewhat impatient.  Likes sun, pools, shopping. Extrovert

Female, age 34, career counselor, creative, laid-back, casual, passive, and very unconventional.  Grew up in small town, lived in moderately-sized city for 8 years.  Has traveled some within U.S., Canada, and USVI.  Appreciates culture, art, music, architecture, shopping, beach, pools, sun, quiet, variety, and dining out/good food/beverages.  Willing to try new things, seeks authentic experiences, some physical activity (very light relative to most others (just walking, swimming, biking, quiet canoeing)). Introvert

Male, age 34, furniture designer and builder, creative, professional.  Moderately well-traveled, enjoys new experiences, food/dining out, relaxation, reading, walking, music, art, design, culture, new people, intimate experiences.  Loves beautiful views.  Likes mixes of activity and privacy, relaxation, rejuvination.  Happy with sun, beach, pools, very atuned to aesthetics and appreciates attention to detail when it comes to physical surroundings.  Somewhat extroverted, very visual.

We are all located in the Eastern time zone of the US.

Any travel match-makers out there?

how about old san juan puerto rico? santa fe might be a good choice too...

http://www.topuertorico.org/city/sanjuan.shtml

"This is a 465-year-old neighborhood originally conceived as a military stronghold. Its 7-square-block area has evolved into a charming residential and commercial district. The streets here are paved with cobbles of adoquine, a blue stone cast from furnace slag; they were brought over a ballast on Spanish ships and time and moisture have lent them their characteristic color. The city includes more than 400 carefully restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings. The Old San Juan attracts many tourists, who also enjoy the gambling casinos, fine beaches, and tropical climate. More tourists visit San Juan each year than any other spot in the Caribbean. A leisurely foot tour is advisable for those who really want to experience this bit of the Old World, especially given the narrow, steep streets and frequently heavy traffic. To really do justice to these wonderful old sites, you'll need two mornings or a full day."

"San Juan Beach & Resort area. This area starts just outside of Old San Juan and includes the areas of Condado, Miramar, Ocean Park and Isla Verde. This is a area of fancy hotels, casinos, nightclubs, restaurants and chic boutiques. "

I suggest either Chicago (cause I live here and love it) or San Fransisco (which I love to visit.) Both have great cultural sites (museums, music scenes, theatre, etc.) , amazing restaurants, and gorgeous scenery.

Thanks for the replies so far, ladies.  If it helps at all, we might be looking at May 2010.  But, at this point, it could be a different month.

Palm Springs, CA might be a good choice. Sun, pools, shopping, art, good food and wine, etc.
