July Lucky - everything is under $100
Permalink Closed

Hi everyone -
I just got the July Lucky.  Everything in the entire magazine is under a hundred bucks.  It's about time!
There was even a cute white jacket...from K-mart!
What do you think?

I saw something about this, but haven't seen the issue yet.  Sounds like they're listening to their readers' complaints...

I looked through the issue and the clothing they chose was good -- a mix of western (country) influenced, punk-ish, preppy, etc. I realize they're listening to their subscribers and addressing the tennor of the times, but I like a little escapism in my reading -- I think they would have benefitted from raising the cap to everything under $200. They could have gotten some better, more interesting clothing. That said, I think they did a great job with what they had (the $100 limit)

To be honest, I'm not crazy about the layouts of this issue. I think they managed to make some things look cheaper when they had an opportunity to show how to make things look more expensive. I know they want you to recognize that it is a budget feature, but catalogs/magazines styled like this are the ones I toss right in the garbage.

I agree they are trying to listen to reader requests, but I think they are stuck in a damned if you do, damned if you don't spot at this point. I think a lot of women are wanting designer quality, but only want to pay $50 for it. I just don't think there is a way to translate deals like that into a magazine. Finding scores like that is a digging, watching, waiting process.

I haven't received my issue yet, but I usually like the "bargain" issues of magazines. I hate it when a magazine lists a $300 skirt as the "save" feature of a Splurge Vs. Save layout. Yes, when you compare the $300 skirt to the $1,500 skirt, it dose seem like a deal, but come on!

Glamour's recent issue (the one with Sandra Bullock on the cover0 was supposed to be their bargain issue, but I didn't really see the theme being carried through out the issue.

I think this could be interesting, like Startstuff I enjoy a bit of escapism as well. That being said, I'll enjoy looking through their finds.

Amen, Sister Boots. I have seen this in so many magazines, but the one I especially notice is Oprah's magazine. $150 jeans are only a steal if you are actually Oprah Winfrey.

I haven't gotten mine yet, but I haven't been enjoying Lucky lately. The only reason I subscribe is for the Lucky rewards.

Can I just say that the choice of words they use in that magazine drive me nuts? They describe everything as having a "quiet" sophistication or "quiet" beauty, etc. etc. How many times can you use the word quiet?!

I wanted to add that I did like items in the magazine, and the Fashion Week spread. I wish they would do more "real girl" features.

Well said - that's my MO.  I agree with your other comment about real girl style too.  I love when WHOWHATWEAR does myspace muses.

I broke down and bought it because of the Under $100 theme - but I still didn't like it. The only sections I liked were the floral spread and the beauty buys (which was pretty fantastic!).

I need to accept that Lucky's style is not my style - I would rather dream about fabulous outfits in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and look at street style blogs.
