getting rid of spider eggs? also, ants
Permalink Closed

Ok, normally I wouldn't care since they're outside, but I found some spider egg sacs on the fence right by my back porch/kitchen window. Since its less than like 3 feet to the window, it kind of grosses me out. Any idea how to get rid of the sacs? Google told me to burn them, but I don't want to accidently burn down the fence or anything! Can I douse them with boiling wwater or something?

While I'm on the bug topic- we had a small ant problem last year that went away once we sprayed and set out some traps. Now with the dog, I'm wary of using poison though. Any ideas on pet-safe ways to keep ants out of my house?

Terro  Ant Killer traps are the absolute best.  they are made with Borax, so =they're nontoxic, and they work.  I would use nothing else (we put the traps inside and out).

They're called Liquid Ant Baits

Good luck with the egg sacks.  (ugh.....shiver....)

might be an old wives tale, but someone told me you can spread cornstarch around your windows and doors or around your house and the ants will eat it and it kills them somehow.....

White distilled vinegar works good for ants.  I put some in a spray bottle or just dump it on the ant hill.  You may have to do it a few times.  It will kill grass, plants so just be careful of that (vinegar works good on weeds too).

I would just take an old broom and knock down the spider egg sacs and step on them.  Setting them on fire seems a bit extreme.

I've heard the same thing about Comet and also salt. Not sure if any are true or not.

We use Raid house and garden
 http://lawn-and-garden.hardwarestore.com/79-503-household-insecticides/raid-house-and-garden-274571.aspx
it works on all insects but works especially well on spiders. It's ok for both indoors and outdoors. It's ok for plants and doesn't even have that poisony smell. We battle the ants more often though. Last year we just called the people to spray, but this year we've just used this home defense stuff and so far they're gone

Slightly off topic but osage oranges stashed around the house is supposed to keep spiders out (just in case the spider sacs open before you find a way to get rif of them)

Oh god! I think I'd call pest control and make them deal with the spider eggs/sacs. I would absolutely die if I saw that so close to my home.

Hilarious- ILoveChoo.  I'm glad it was dog hair.

I'm intrigued, several people on this thread make it sound like they don't have spiders on or around their house.  Many windows on our house have at least one web in the corner with a spider living in/on it, complete with the much mentioned egg sac.  Are there really people out there with no spiders on their house?  And, if so, how do you do it?  Oh, a world without spiders would be magnificent (yeah - I know they probably kill some sort of invasive insect or perform some other beneficial act for which I didn't ask).

Oh thank goodness! Dog hair sounds so much better. I bet you were laughing your butt off when you figured it out.

Pollyjean - I have small spiders in my apartment but I have never seen an actual web started by one of them on the inside. I usually kill them before they have a chance lol. My parents on the other hand have had spider webs on their house before but no egg sacs.
