Hair Breakage due to Highlighting/Straightening Iron
Permalink Closed

I got my hair highlighted 2 weeks ago (I have black/dark brown hair and got caramel streaks)) and I've been using a flat iron on it about 2x a week since then. Today, while blowdrying my hair, I noticed that several strands on both sides of my head were severely broken. It does not look good!

Am I totally killing my hair? I feel like my hair does not look nearly as cute as when I flat iron it. But I only use it 2x a week. Am I using the wrong flat iron (a Solano Sapphire)?

Is highlighting the cause? I plan on getting touched up every 7 weeks. I love my new look but I don't want all my hair to break/fall out.

Any thoughts? I'm really worried about this.

I'm not sure what's going on with your hair. Have you ever had it highlighted before? Did you use the flat iron before you highlighted?

I highlight every 8 weeks and use the straightener a few times a week and I don't have any broken hairs. Or at least I don't notice any.

Maybe it's just your hair getting used to being highlighted for the first time? If they continue to break off, I'd be concerned but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

It was my first time highlighting. I started using the flat iron a lot more often after the highlights.

I'm going to try some sort of hair mask this weekend. Hopefully that will help!

Almost anytime you lighten your hair you weaken it. That in addition to using a flat iron is most likely causing the breakage.
It really helps if you use a ceramic flat iron insted of a metal, you should also be using some sort of heat protectant, before you flat iron. Biolage makes a great one called Thermal Active, and Chi also makes a great Flat iron and flat iron products.

Some Infusium or some Redkin Anti-snap on wet hair will help. Also, look at Rusks Str8 line. They have a bunch of protectants for flat ironing that helped my hair. I really like the Rusk hair mask. Your hair will feel like silk.

Also, putting some shine serum on your blonde streaks will make them look nicer. It will smoother the rough, broken ends.

This could works for ur proble, I recommend Pro Naturals Moroccan Oil Hair Treatment with Heat Protector, it helps strenghten the hair that's prone to breakage, splitting or snapping off, gently smoothes the hair and form a protective mist on surface against heat damage, reduces friction from brushing and helps prevent further damage, leaves hair healthy, shiny and resilient and provides heat protection against electronic hair tools. I use it and my hair looks healthy and shiny, I hope this helps u .
